The most common reason Indian outfits get sent back isn't the colour or the fabric. It's the size. Indian clothing is sized by body measurement, and those sizes run smaller than the letters you're used to on the high street. A "Medium" from an Irish shop is often a Small or even an Extra Small in Indian sizing.
This guide converts your usual size to Indian sizes, shows you how to measure, and covers the pieces that fit differently: saree blouses, dhavani sets, men's kurtas and kids' wear.
The one rule: go by your bust or chest measurement
Indian sizes are set by a single body measurement in inches, the bust for women and the chest for men. Your usual dress size is only a rough starting point, because it varies from brand to brand. A tape measure gives you the right answer every time.
At Veuxo, a Medium means a 38-inch bust or chest. In Irish shops, which use UK sizing, that is closer to a size 14 than a size 10 or 12.
Women's sizes: salwar suits, anarkalis and kurtis

Saree blouses and dhavani sets
Blouses fit closer to the body than a salwar top, so getting the size right matters more. Our stitched blouses and dhavani sets use the same bust chart, from M (38") to XXXL (46"), plus two combined sizes for a bit of flexibility:
- M-L: 38" bust, extending up to 40"
- XL-XXL: 42" bust, extending up to 44"
If you'd rather not worry about an exact fit, a stretchable blouse has side panels that give a more forgiving fit. It's also a quick way to match a saree you already own.
How to measure for a blouse
- Bust: measure around the fullest part, over the bra you plan to wear, with the tape snug but not tight.
- Under-bust: measure directly below the bust. It helps you decide whether a combined size like M-L will sit snugly.
- Blouse length: from the shoulder to where you want the hem, usually just below the under-bust.
Between sizes? Choose the larger one. A stitched blouse can be taken in by a tailor, but it can't be let out much.
Men's sizes: kurtas and shirts
Men's kurtas and shirts follow the same idea, sized by chest measurement in inches:
- XS: 34" chest
- S: 36" chest
- M: 38" chest
- L: 40" chest
- XL: 42" chest
- XXL: 44" chest
- XXXL: 46" chest

Kids' sizes: pavada and skirt-and-blouse sets
Children's traditional sets, such as pattu pavada, are sized by number, with an age guide. Use the child's chest measurement first and treat the age as a rough check, because children of the same age vary a lot:
- Size 14: about 0–3 months, 17.5" chest, 14" skirt length
- Size 16: about 4–12 months, 18" chest, 16" skirt length
- Size 18: about 1–2 years, 19" chest, 18" skirt length
- Size 20: about 2–3 years, 20" chest, 20" skirt length
- Size 22: about 3–4 years, 21" chest, 22" skirt length
- Size 24: about 4–5 years, 22" chest, 24" skirt length
- Size 26: about 5–6 years, 23" chest, 26" skirt length
- Size 28: about 6–7 years, 24" chest, 28" skirt length

Fabric changes the fit
- Cotton (kasavu, mulcotton, printed cotton) has no stretch. Stick to your exact measurement or size up.
- Silk and Banarasi hold their shape and don't give. Size up if you're between sizes.
- Rayon and blends drape more loosely and are the most forgiving.
- Stretch blouses are made to flex, so choose by the range printed on the product.
Five common sizing mistakes
- Ordering your usual letter size. An M on the high street is often an S or XS in Indian sizing. Measure first.
- Measuring over a thick jumper. Measure over a thin top or the bra you'll wear, or you'll order a size too big.
- Choosing the smaller size when in between. It's much easier to take a garment in than let it out.
- Forgetting the blouse. A saree without "blouse" in its name doesn't come with one, so add one in your size.
- Leaving it too late. For Onam, weddings or Diwali, order early enough to leave time for a size exchange.
