A kasavu mundu is Kerala's traditional white or off-white cotton garment with a woven gold (kasavu) border. Men wear it as a wrap, the mundu, and women wear it as a two-piece set, the set mundu or mundum neriyathum. When you buy one, check four things: the border width, single or double length, cotton quality, and whether you need the man's mundu only or the women's two-piece set. Men's mundu vs women's set mundu
- Men's kasavu mundu: one piece wrapped around the waist, tucked, and often folded up to knee length when walking. It is worn with a shirt or kurta, and for Onam usually with a matching kasavu-bordered shirt.
- Set mundu (women): two pieces. The mundu is worn as the lower wrap, and the neriyathu is tucked at the waist and draped over the left shoulder. It is worn with a blouse, often in the border colour.
- Kasavu saree: the modern single-piece version, draped like a regular saree. It is easier if you are used to sarees.
Border width
Border width is mostly a matter of taste, but it also signals formality. A narrow border (roughly a finger's width) is understated and suits daily wear and temple visits. A broad border, sometimes with extra stripes, is more festive and suits Onam, weddings and photographs. Many Onam mundus pair a broad gold border with thin coloured zari stripes in red, black or blue. Single vs double
A single mundu is one layer, which makes it lighter, cooler and easier to fold up. A double mundu (double veshti) is twice the length and wrapped twice, giving more body and less transparency, and it is preferred for formal occasions. Gold, off-white or cream?
"White" kasavu ranges from bright white to natural off-white or cream, which is the undyed colour of the cotton. Off-white is more traditional. Gold zari can be bright yellow-gold or a softer antique gold, and product photos can vary with screen settings, so read the product title as well as looking at the photo. Our kasavu is handloom cotton with tested zari: a gold-coloured metallic thread rather than pure gold.
Sizing
A mundu is not cut to a waist size. You wrap it and tuck it in, so one size fits most adults. The only thing to check is the length: if you are very tall, make sure the mundu will reach your ankle. We also sell a kuttimundu (a kids' mundu) for €10.
Wearing it for Onam abroad
Onam falls in August or September, when the weather is cool in Dublin and London and it is still late winter in Melbourne. A kasavu mundu is thin cotton, so plan for layers: a kasavu-bordered shirt over a vest, or a plain cream kurta for evening functions. Wrap it firmly and fold the top edge over twice to hold it secure if you will be sitting down for a long sadya.
What to pay
Price mostly follows the border and the weave. Plain mundus with a narrow gold border sit at the lower end. Broad borders, extra zari stripes and two-piece women's sets cost more, because there is simply more zari in them. If a heavily bordered mundu is priced far below the rest of the market, ask whether the border is woven or printed, because printed gold fades after a few washes. Buying from a storefront in your own country also means you pay in your own currency, avoid customs paperwork, and can exchange a size within the policy window instead of posting it back to India.
Care
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, and keep the zari border out of harsh scrubbing.
- Dry in the shade. Strong sun yellows white cotton and dulls zari.
- Traditionally, mundus are lightly starched and ironed while slightly damp for a crisp finish.
- Store folded in a cotton bag, away from damp. Do not use plastic.
Matching the family
A common Onam photo sets the man in a kasavu mundu and shirt, the woman in a set mundu or kasavu saree, girls in pattupavada or a kasavu dhavani, and boys in a kuttimundu. Buy them together so the golds match, because border shades vary between batches.
