Three ways to buy a dhavani

• Brocade dhavani sets (£42.99): a coordinated brocade blouse, checked or brocade skirt and a contrast shawl-style drape, such as maroon with blue-and-gold checks or red brocade with a black-and-gold border. These are the most budget-friendly complete looks.
• Kanji cotton, Lichi silk, Chanderi silk and kasavu (£44.99): classic South Indian half sarees with woven or zari borders.

The three pieces

A dhavani is made up of the pavadai (a long flared skirt), a cropped blouse, and the dhavani itself, a half-length drape that is tucked, pleated and pinned at the left shoulder. It is what many Tamil, Telugu and Malayali girls in the UK wear for their first big festival, a ritual ceremony or a family wedding, before they move on to a full saree.

Which fabric?

Kanji cotton is the most comfortable choice for a long indoor day. Lichi and Chanderi silk have more shine for evening events and photographs. The brocade sets are the heaviest and most formal, and they suit winter weddings.
