What is in a dhavani set?

A dhavani, also called langa voni or half saree, is a three-piece outfit worn across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

  • Pavadai (skirt): a long, flared, ankle-length skirt, usually with a contrast border. On our kasavu dhavanis it is organza.
  • Blouse: a fitted, cropped blouse, often in the border colour.
  • Dhavani (the drape): a half-length cloth tucked at the waist, pleated across the body and pinned at the left shoulder, like the pallu of a saree.

It is lighter and quicker to put on than a full six-yard saree, which is why it is popular for long days such as an Onam sadya or a temple festival.

Fabrics in our range

  • Kanji cotton: structured cotton with a woven border, in forest green, maroon, magenta, deep navy and peacock green with maroon. It is comfortable in warm Onam weather.
  • Lichi silk: a softer sheen, in black, maroon and checked purple or green.
  • Chanderi silk: light and slightly translucent, in copper orange, deep purple, olive and deep maroon.
  • Kasavu dhavani: an organza skirt with a scalloped dupatta, in magenta or olive.
  • Stitched dawani (A$89.99): the skirt, blouse and drape are pre-stitched so the outfit goes on in minutes.

Sizing by age

Women's dhavanis come in S to 3XL and follow our bust chart: S 36, M 38, L 40, XL 42, XXL 44 (bust, in inches). Teenagers usually fit S or M. For younger girls, the traditional choice is a pattupavada (silk skirt and blouse, without the drape) at A$49.99, in ages 1–2 years through 11–13 years. We also stock a pink-and-gold half saree for girls at A$69.99. Both are in kids' wear. Girls usually move from pattupavada to women's dhavani sizes at around 12–13.

Wearing a dhavani in Melbourne

Victoria's Malayali and Tamil communities hold Onam, Vishu and Pongal celebrations across the city, and dhavanis appear at all of them, along with Bharatanatyam arangetrams and first-birthday functions. Onam falls in Australia's late winter and early spring, so the Kanji cotton sets work well with a light wrap for evening programmes.
