Kerala sarees in Melbourne
Malayali families in Australia often find that the white-and-gold Kerala saree they want for Onam, Vishu or a temple visit is hard to buy locally. The Kerala range is the heart of this collection: cream kasavu sarees with gold zari borders, checked and striped kasavu, a kasavu saree with red floral embroidery, and mulcotton sarees in bold border colours for people who want something less formal than kasavu. Order at least three weeks before Thiruvonam for standard delivery, and earlier if you can, because kasavu sells out fast.
Fabrics explained
- Kasavu / Kerala cotton: handloom off-white cotton with a tested zari border (a gold-coloured metallic thread rather than pure gold, so it is affordable and easy to care for). It is light, crisp and cool, which is why it is worn at Onam in August and September.
- Mulcotton: a soft, fine cotton that drapes easily and is kind to beginners. It is a good everyday or office saree for an Australian summer.
- Semi-jute with kasavu border: more textured and structured, and sold with an elbow-sleeve blouse.
- Silk and Banarasi: soft silk and georgette Banarasi with woven zari, for weddings and receptions. Several come with a stitched blouse.
- Tissue: sheer and shimmering, and popular as set sarees for festivals.
- Ready-to-wear: pre-pleated semi-modal sarees with mirrorwork that go on in minutes. They are a good choice if you have never draped a saree.
Blouse sizing
Look for "with blouse" or "with stitched blouse" in the product name. Stitched blouses follow our bust-size chart: M 38, L 40, XL 42, XXL 44, XXXL 46. Some come in combined sizes, M-L (38, extending to 40) and XL-XXL (42, extending to 44). All measurements are bust size in inches. A saree without "blouse" in its name does not include one, and none of our sarees come with an unstitched blouse piece, so there is nothing to tailor. You can add a matching blouse from our blouse range.
