Salwar, anarkali or churidar: which one do you need?
All three are versions of the same outfit: a long top (the kameez or kurta), a bottom and usually a dupatta. What changes is the cut.
- Salwar suit: a straight or A-line kameez worn over salwar trousers that are loose at the hip and gathered at the ankle. It is the most relaxed fit and the easiest to wear all day, whether that is a family lunch or a long temple visit.
- Anarkali: a kameez fitted through the bodice that flares out from the waist into a long, full skirt. It is the dressiest of the three and the one most people choose for weddings, receptions and Diwali parties. Our flared georgette and velvet-yoke anarkalis sit at the top of the price range.
- Churidar: a kameez paired with slim trousers cut extra-long so they bunch into rings (churi, "bangles") at the ankle. It looks neat and elongating under a knee-length or longer kurta.

Fabrics for Australian weather
Melbourne can go from 35°C to a cold change in an afternoon, so it is worth picking a fabric for when you will wear the outfit. Cotton, rayon and chanderi kurta sets breathe well for summer Diwali lunches and backyard gatherings. Georgette and velvet-yoke anarkalis hold their shape and colour better at evening functions and winter weddings.
Sizing
We size salwar suits by bust measurement, from XS (34 inches) to XXXL (46 inches). Every product page has its own size chart. If you fall between two sizes, choose by your bust and hip rather than your usual Australian dress size, because the kameez should skim rather than cling. Taller customers should look for pieces listed in XL Long length.
